Somatic Therapy Adelaide

When you’ve talked about it so much, but you still feel the same.

It is a common frustration to have a deep intellectual understanding of your history, yet find that your body hasn't received the memo. You might know you’re safe, but you still feel hijacked by reactions you can’t seem to stop.

I want you to know that your body isn't "broken." In fact, it’s being incredibly clever. Those feelings of panic, shutdown, or activation are your system’s way of trying to protect you. The difficulty is that this protection has now become the very thing you are struggling with.

Moving beyond the story: Releasing Physical Memories of the Past

In our sessions, we move beyond just analysing the story. I use somatic, body-oriented therapies like Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Deep Brain Reorienting DBR, and Haveningto help you safely reconnect with the parts of your experience you've had to push away and address the ways your system is still bracing against the past.

Often, my clients find that finally allowing themselves to feel what is there isn't as hard as they imagined it would be. By working this way, we help your nervous system realise it is no longer in danger, allowing you to finally settle into the present and stop the constant background buzz of anxiety and struggle.

Healing Your Relationship with Food and Body

This same 'clever' protection often shows up in our relationship with food and our bodies. Whether it’s using food for comfort or feeling disconnected from your physical self, these patterns are usually a survival strategy for a dysregulated nervous system. We work to understand the protective role these patterns play so you can find a more peaceful, grounded way of being in your own skin.
